You get anxious when you look at your workspace. You know it's not really serving you, but you don't how to reconfigure it. You know you don't want a sterile blank surface, but you're not sure what will work best for you.
You procrastinate a lot and/or you're always late. Procrastination and chronic lateness are often two sides of the same coin, and creative people are especially prone to the kind of magical thinking that contributes to both.
The business side of your creative business is getting out of control and cutting into your creativity. You spend more time tracking down your financial information and scrambling to send out invoices than you do creating.
You've tried to get organized before, but it just didn't take. Maybe you've read a few organizing books, or got a bunch of bins and baskets, but the books read like they were written for someone else completely, and the bins and baskets are still sitting around and have become clutter themselves.
You have that nagging feeling that you could be doing better work if you could just get a handle on your time, space and/or information. The good news is: you're right!
Getting Sorted works best for people who value:
Compassion—especially for themselves. There can be a lot of shame involved in being disorganized, although many creative people try to wear it as a badge of "creative pride." Meanwhile, they're beating themselves up any time they can't find what they need or are embarrassed to have anyone see their workspace. My motto is: "No shame, no blame... let's see if we can make it a game." We'll get a lot farther if you can be gentle with yourself.
Humor and fun. As you might guess from the "make it a game" motto, it's quite possible for getting Sorted to be a lot of fun. Personally, I love to laugh and to make others laugh, because it reduces tension and helps most folks learn new stuff.
Learning. You'll be getting some new information and new perspectives, so there will definitely be learning involved. The more eager you are to learn, the more progress you can make. That doesn't mean I don't want you to question my ideas or come up with ideas of your own; in fact, that's how some of the best learning happens, for both of us.
Doing their best, feeling their best, being their best. You're filled with creative energy and passion, ready to make some changes, and you want to share your best work with the world. All you need is some coaching on organization and you'll be on fire!
